Chapter Seven

The conversation devolved into the ridiculous, and it left Jo feeling a bit better even after her friends had left. Whenever she closed her eyes, she saw the absolutely hate filled expression on Sadie’s face and being surrounded by people who had never even once entertained the thought that she might actually be the one responsible for Marie’s death was comforting.

She slept well for the first time since she found Marie and felt ready to face the day when she woke up. She went through her morning routine, pausing to scratch Darwin, her red coated, troublemaking alpaca, behind the ears before heading back inside to dress for the day. She put on her usual work attire, jeans, a blouse, and comfortable shoes. One of the things that she loved about owning her own business was being able to make up her own dress code. As long as she and her employees looked presentable and clean, she really didn’t care what they wore. She wouldn’t be thrilled if someone showed up wearing sweatpants, but jeans were perfectly fine every day of the week.

The yarn shop was busier than usual that morning, which made the time seem to go by quickly. She hardly even realized that the end of her shift had rolled around until she saw Kaylee come in. Her employee made a beeline for the counter and stored her purse behind it before stretching and looking around.

“Want me to get the tables set up for your meeting?” she asked.

“Shoot, I completely forgot to do that earlier. No, don’t you worry about it. I’ll take care of it tonight. I’ve got to head out and run some errands before the meeting. You should have an easy afternoon – it was busy this morning, but it’s been tapering off recently.”

“I’ll be fine,” Kaylee said with a wave. “Do you think you’ll be back before close?”

“Probably,” Jo said. “I’m not sure if I want to go home after my errands or not. If I don’t, I’ll probably be here an hour or two before close. I might just work on my crocheting in the back, or do some reorganizing up front, I’m not sure.”

She only had a couple of errands to run and decided to stop and pick up some things for the club meeting tonight first. It was Darlene’s turn to bring snacks, but Jo wanted to make sure there was extra since they were expecting some new members. When she got to the grocery store, she claimed a cart and started her rounds, eyeing a selection of small sandwiches in the deli section. After a moment, she went to the vegetable aisle and grabbed a selection of cucumbers instead, then turned toward the bread aisle. While it was tempting to buy the premade sandwiches, freshly made ones would be better, and it wasn’t as if cucumber sandwiches were hard to put together.

Once she had the ingredients for the sandwiches, she gathered a box of donuts and a case of water bottles, then headed for the checkout lane.
